Why Sifnos?

Sifnos is a mountainous island with fertile valleys, beautiful beaches and several towns. It has a long history and has been inhabited since 3000 BC.

The legacy of Sifnos`s history is still evident today in its archaeological sites, traditional pottery workshops, and stunning Cycladic architecture.

What to do

  • Kastro

Kastro is the old capital of the island and the seat of the Archdiocese of Sifnos (6th-19th century). It is one of the most picturesque, beautiful, and the most important of the villages of the island from an archaeological standpoint.

  • Apollonia

Apollonia's history on Sifnos is tied to the ancient worship of the god Apollo, with the town named after an ancient temple dedicated to him. It became the island's capital in 1836, moving from the older Kastro.

  • Chrysopigi

The Monastery of Panagia of Chrysopigi (1650), dedicated to the patron Virgin Mary protector of Sifnos. The landscape—the white structure, the low vegetation, and the endless sea—creates an atmosphere of absolute tranquility and spirituality.

  • Unforgettable Sunsets

There are many places from which you can enjoy the sunsets, either over the sea in some beach or a boat, some iconic monastery on the coast or high in the mountains.

  • Amazing Beaches

The island offers many island options of beaches: soft sand or rocky, crystal-clear water, completely remote to busier ones. All options for every age and taste.

  • Hiking

Explore hidden treasures. We recommend checking the weather before you head out, and staying hydrated! Check some trails here.

  • All Kinds of Friends!

Around the island there is a great coexistence with wildlife, birds, fish and - of course - cats. If you are an animal lover, we recommend Anthi Farm where you can feed animals, milk a goat, make local cheese, and taste local delicacies!

  • Boat Tour

You also can explore caves, hidden beaches or simply enjoy the day swimming and sailing in the Aegean. You can rent boats by the day or ferry hop to nearby islands, like Milos, Kimolos, Serifos, and Polyaigos.

  • Sifnian Pottery

One of the most ancient crafts practised in Sifnos from the early Cycladic period all the way to the present day is pottery making. You can book a class in a family workshop or simply buy a nice souvenir.

  • Churches

The churches, historic monasteries and picturesque chapels are spread throughout the island at the most remarkable spots inspiring visitors.

  • Gastronomy

Sifnos is a gastronomic destination: seafood, slow-cooked meat dishes, and many more options for all kinds of diet made with local ingredients. More under “travel tips”.
